2023 in brief(s) - Oo-err, sounds a bit rude!

Summary of 2023

As usual, let's get the rubbishy bits out of the way first.

The tail end of the year could have been better. Our old cat Leo has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism so he'll be getting treatment for that next week. Afterwards, he'll need to be isolated for two weeks which will be very tricky even if he doesn't want to go outside in the bad weather. It's kind of difficult to explain to a cat that he needs to keep his distance from you because he is literally radio active! Thankfully, most of his care will be covered via insurance, but if anyone wishes to give me any extra work to cover the cost of his vet's bills, please get in touch, it'd be greatly appreciated.

It looks like we'll finally be moving out of our home of 12 years. It also seems that we may have to downsize to the tune of one room, something which we're both extremely annoyed by and are going to do our best to fight for. But it's either that or lose the place entirely, since our current house is set for demolition anyway! On the plus side our shouty neighbour has moved out so it's been wonderfully peaceful this Christmas season.

For the rest, it's been a mostly upbeat year with @Topperhay and I chugging away with our animated projects and regular artworks. We also celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary, so only one more year 'til the next milestone. There was other stuff too: some art events ('caricaturing' oh my) and also seeing Ade Edmondson live at the same venue as Thought Bubble, an event we have attended previously. We also attended Thought Bubble again shortly afterwards, only as 'cosplayers' I believe the term is, as opposed to tabling. It was fun to do a triple act this time with @Topperhay, her brother and myself as Laverne, Hoagie and Bernard from the video game "Day of the Tentacle" and we also managed to meet up with some friends and fans while we were there.

I also started writing a dream journal, when I could remember stuff in enough detail, I put it all in. Although the file got corrupted in mid-August which was quite annoying. In addition to this daily writing exercise, I did a balance chart of good and bad things that happened each day and how I felt about them/deal with them. Happy to report, it's mostly positives.

This year, we also started our own Discord server. It's been a slow process for me to warm up to that site, but it can be very useful and fun if you know what to do on it. Plus it's just a handy way to keep everything in one place. So if you're a fan of our works you might want to join in. We post updates on our projects as well as holding monthly art jams, weekly livestreams and general chit-chat.

See you all in 2024, where I hope things can continue on the up and up.

2022 Summary (and wintery)

Time for the end of the year round up. I am at present residing with my family in Aberdeen, winding down after a busy spell and some travel. Of course, as with any year there have been ups and downs. Let's get the downs over with first. This year, I lost one of my closest friends. Gemini, one of our cats unexpected passed away in mid-April. He was a great laugh and a great chum and I will miss him dearly. He'll live on in artwork and local slang though! Love you mate, miss you. On another down, our neighbour's loud-mouthed 'guest' is still in residence and I'm looking forward to the day where he or we finally move. Paper-thin walls don't help. On the plus side, @Topperhay and I finally got the go ahead to decorate a media box on our street. We managed to sneak in a few cameos on the final artwork including ourselves, as our shouty neighbour astutely observed. Here we are at the end of the first month and I must say I'm impressed, especially since this is the first Indiegogo campaign I've ever done. Warning: Probably not the best of my journals! Still, I hope I retain my mordant 'wit'. This year has generally been pretty abysmal from start to finish, apart from maybe the first couple of months. The main highlights for me were increased business and more socialising with our cats. Lockdown and Covid meant we couldn't really do anything else so the pets are always good company. I should be grateful that, because we always work from home, the situation didn't affect us much either way in that regard. This year for my month-long October art challenge I'm going to be doing another monster-a-day but taking my cues from the alphabet. If you want to join in, here's an explanation of the guidelines The first monster in the list must start with the letter A. Second, with B, and so on. Draw your entries to match this pattern. There are all sorts of myths and legends you can look up to use for each letter, so try not to go for the obvious. When we get to Z, that leaves us with 5 extra days, so use this in any way you like. Perhaps with numbers, perhaps with a randomised letter, a nameless monster... Black and white to full colour, digital or traditional. Doesn't matter. Variety is the spice and all that. Artwork must be new, but you can always get a head start whenever you like. Just try and post stuff on the actual day it pertains to, if possible. Have fun!
