Is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO IT'S AN ART JAM! If you can't tell the difference, you might want to consider getting spectacles.

HEY HERO FANS! Do you admire all those dedicated defenders of law and order? Do you get a quivering sensation whenever you see justice being meted out? Do you like gaudy spandex and incredible biceps?

OF COURSE YOU DO! So why not brace yourself and gird your loins for the most heroic art jam of the year!*

*(art jam officially most heroic at time of typing)
AC rocket-pack by Granitoons
READ THESE IMPORTANT RULES BEFORE TAKING PART, ARTISTIC CITIZENS.

* All entries must be submitted bewteen 00:00 hours on 1st of March and 23:59:59 hours on the 31st March, in your local time zone.
* The theme is SUPER, so draw something with an HEROIC AND ACTION-PACKED flavour to it. Super-heroes, space-heroes, auntie heroes, all that kind of thing.
* It can be anything involving your characters. Stand-alone artworks or comics. If using the characters of others, might be an idea to ask permission first, because it's the RIGHT thing to do!
* Serve up a hero sandwich of ham, cheese and corn - leave the dark & gritty stuff to the side of the plate! Unless edgy-spoofing is the joke.
* All art must be brand new, so be honest and true in your submissions!
* Villains are welcome too, since without them we'd be out of a job!
* Using the logo below on your submissions, guarantees an art jam SEAL OF QUALITY

Well loyal followers! Looks like that wraps up another mission! Glad to see there's still plenty of heroic folks out there to continue my good work! Keep believing and remember, it's not all about the fame and fortune - it's about the JUSTICE!
We're currently having a mega tidy-up in our neck of the woods. New year, new start and more space to clutter up with new rubbish! A lot of stuff I put aside because I just know it'll come in handy, didn't come in handy, so out it went, or to the charity shop along with bundles of old clothes.

I am also in the process of organising the art room and getting old art stored properly, so I'm having a bit of a sale if anyone's interested, as I don't like to throw anything out.

So, if you see anything in my gallery you like, let me know and we can come to some arrangement regarding buying and posting.

If you'd like a hard copy of any commissions or gifts I may have done for you over the years, then I will only charge for postage and packaging.

I also have many filled-up sketchbooks for sale too, of various sizes.

Let me know if interested!

Had a bit of a week's break after a very hectic final month to 2016. More information on my wife's journal here. Like she says, it's been a weird year for extremes, but I won't reiterate the pros and cons here, just read her bit to get the details, plus some information of a new project we're preparing.

Also many thanks to everyone who participated in my major art jams of 2016, both the Royal March and the Monster a day art challenge for Hallowe'en.  I was amazed at the level of response to both of those. Naturally, I'll have a couple this year too, but for now, have a wee stroll through the past to see any entries you may have missed.

We got a rare chance to play host this year for Boxing Day and we managed to please our guests with a really adventurous 3 course meal, which we'd been rehearsing (so to speak) for weeks! Even managed to win a bottle of sparkling wine for the day via the gas board! We also hope we fed you well, comic-wise, with our recent Christmas special, Raven Hood. The title should give you a decent enough idea of what tale we spoofed this year, and with whom.

This past week we've been 'chillin' (as I believe the kool kidz say) at my parents' home. Took the bus up this time and although it was 3 hours longer in travelling, it didn't seem all that long of a journey. Nor did it seem like all that long since we were last here. We also managed to arrive JUST in time for midnight on the 31st of December!

Yesterday, we went out to a cat cafe (yes, these are a thing now) for my dad's birthday yesterday, followed by lunch at our favourite bookshop-cum-cafe and a fish & chips tea in the evening. Presents, food and cats - he was pleased with this day overall.

New year, new carpets - they are getting replaced in my folks home this week as well so it's interesting to see the bare boards and the fact that there are apparently 3 traps doors in the floor of the main stairway! It's all go though, Mum & bro off to a concert out of town this week too, so it'll be the usual pub quiz at the spooky pub this week for us, with my dad coming along for that too. We might be able to use an extra brrrrain! Hopefully manage to squeeze in a meal at the new (to us) Turkish restaurant and a pint with an old pal too before we head back.

Naturally all this upheaval has not stopped us producing art at least once a day!

Happy new year everyone and keep drawing!

A fiendish art challenge for the spookiest of months! I enjoyed last year's one, so I decided to come up with my own list this year. Feel free to join in, or even come up with your own list.

As much as I love vampires, zombies and werewolves, I thought I’d plump for some less popular creatures this time around – they need love too! If you're jumping on the creepy bandwagon, you can draw these characters in any style or tone or even have your cast fancy-dressing as them. Use traditional or digital, full colour, black & white or anything in-between, as long as you have maahhnnsterously good fun with it! :iconvincentpriceplz:

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

Today sees us at the end of the end of the Monster A Day Art Challenge and I have to say – I’ve been impressed, to put it mildly.

First of all, I would like to wish you all a Happy Hallowe’en so get out there and have some spooky and/or dressing up related fun and shenanigans after having a browse through all these wonderful art pieces.

Secondly, and just as importantly, I would like to commend all you artists for taking part in this month-long art challenge. I’ve been absolutely blown away by the response given to this idea and have had a great time just looking at all the entries. An additional pat on the back to those who managed to stick to every day of this event and also to those who went the extra mile by making either colour entries, comics, or ‘thinking outside the box’ style submissions. If there remain any other entries I have omitted, please forgive and alert me – there were just that many pieces of art, that overlooking some became all too easy and actually overloaded my journal on several occasions!

Once again, well done all and have a simply MONSTEROUS(ly fun) Hallowe’en!

Since you were all so kind to me  for my birthday, I thought I'd do you a special 2-for-1 deal on commissions!

Basically, order a regular full colour commissioned piece and get a black-&-white inked drawing for free.

Don't forget, Blonge! - volume 3 is available - 54 pages of all-new comics for only £6. -> Blonge! volume 3 and Hull comic con' (UPDATES!)

Drop me a note if interested.

I won't spam your inboxes by replying to each and every one (that'd take all day!) so just rest assured that I saw and appreciate everything. :)

1. AstroCat was created mainly because of a mispronounciation. While on holiday my brother spotted a jigsaw puzzle in a shop window of Disney's 'The AristoCats' (which was a fave film of mine growing up) Him: 'What's that film called again? The AstroCats?' Me: (thinks) Hmm, I'll remember that!

2. He doesn't drink, smoke or cheat at cards.

3. His dazzling smile can temporarily blind his opponents, so his teeth have been registered as dangerous weapons in the mouth of an unprofessional.

4. He is one of the few superheroes who can scratch his bum with his tongue and (almost) always lands on his feet.

5. He is completely oblivious to his female fans admirations and Lt. Ashlyn is basically like a younger, yet more sensible, sister to him.

6. Out of all the villains he has tackled none have given him as much trouble and humiliation as his evil Spanish doppelganger Tacortsa!

7. All his dialogue must be read at top volume using your best GARY OWENS style voice.

8. The pad on his chest is a highly sophisticated piece of work - it multi-funtions as a communicator, digital ID badge and mini telly. Though it still can't pick up Channel 5.

A Royal March (art jam logo) by Granitoons
By regal proclamation I am announcing a fantastic (in ye olde sense of the word) art jam for March.

The Royal March will take us on a trip through fabulous (again, in ye olde meaning of the word) lands of orcs and goblins, flagons and dragons and hearty meals for 2 gold pieces. You can come along for the adventure, as long as you remember that the pen is mightier than the sword. This is because all you have to do to take part is get scribing, scrolling or scribbling some swords and sorcery-related shenanigans.

Here's ye royal seal to use on your entries, also at the head of this journal. A Royal March (art jam logo) by Granitoons

And here are ye rules.

* The art must be brand new and original.
* Art can be a stand-alone piece, a comic etc. but it must be in keeping with the fighting and fantasy element. Think Fighting Fantasy, Dungeons and Dragons, Knightmare or Conan the Barbarian to get the feel of things. Use our own characters, in this setting.
* Want to use other artists' characters? Fine by me, but check with them first.
* All art to be submitted between ye 1st of March and March ye 31st. So you've got plenty time to get a head start should you so desire.
* Any questions, feel free to ask.
* Roll a six to start.
* Above all, havest thy fun!

This has been a very nice year to me all told. Lots of positive things happened and very few negatives. I could list them all here but I’ll keep it simple by just saying that the plusses outweighed the minuses by far. I hope all of you had a fine festive season with plenty of fun, frivolity and terrible hangovers. We spent ours with my family in Aberdeen this year but are now back in Leeds for Hogmanay (we do it turn about each year) and we certainly had a grand old time eating, drinking and exchanging gifts. I could also list the Christmas gifts I received, but I’ll spare you that too, since I’m not materialistic and am over the age of 10. Suffice it to say that people I know are far too generous. I am very grateful to have such good family and friends and sometimes it takes a reflective look at the year to make me realise this.

Speaking of which, I’d also like to extend a big thank you to all the people on here (and off) who have supported my wife and I in our business venture. We’re still not exactly in the major leagues yet, but this year is a definite long step up from last which was pretty good in itself. So to all of you who supported us via commissions, be they DA-related or otherwise, we thank you.

As for now, we've gone full Scottish stereotyope mode - for once –  since it is the 31st of December. There’s Cullen skink to be supped, haggis, neeps and tatties to guzzle and beetroot and oatcakes to munch. So, let’s raise a glass of cheer and see in 2016 – starting it as we mean to carry on – by drawing things at an incredible rate of noughts!

Pip-pip old fruits! Have a SMASHING 2016!

  • Eating: Cheese and oatcakes
  • Drinking: Wine
UPDATE - Finally my dental appointment has come and gone and with it, the pain and awkwardness has also gone. Many thanks to all those who helped me raise enough to cover my expenses. It's good to be able to enjoy my food again!

As a thank you, I will still be doing commissions at half-price until the end of the month, so get in now if you fancy.

Thanks once again!

Had a bit of a shock recently, but things are improving now I know what's wrong. I need root canal surgery on my broken tooth (that little git's been a nuisance for years now!) which will allow the annoying abscess above it to be removed. It's a load off my mind, but not my wallet, so I'm having a half-price commissions sale to help foot the bills.

Basically anything you want, I'll cut the price in half - no quibbles. Why not treat friends, family or even yourself to a cartoony sketch, comic or painting in time for Christmas?

Just note me if you feel you can help.

Thanks for any support!

Yesterday, TopperHay and I had a wee stall at the annual Jewish Nosh Fest in Leeds. It was held at the local synagogue and it was exceptionally busy! We were taking on-the-spot commissions and most everyone was delighted with what they got and we managed to promote ourselves, with the help of the organisers and compère, throughout the day.

As we'd already helped set everything up on the Friday, we were allowed to attend for free. Coupled with this, was the fact that I'd previously done a commission for the housing committee, designing a tea-towel so that helped drum up awareness for us. An enjoyable, profitable day all told.

Oh and there was food too - never a bad thing!

Here are a few photos.

Also if you want to find out about what happened at MancsterCon for us have a read here -> MancsterCon 2015 Recap

We had a really fun time at MancsterCon2015. Special thanks to LaptopGeek92 for letting us crash at her place and also PurpleSallyJay for helping us shlep our stuff all over Manchester. And a big thank you to everyone who came to chat to us and supported our work! Honestly, the best thing about conventions is meeting a bunch of new and like-minded people to befriend and support.
There’s still some annuals, posters and a few other trinkets to be sold so if you fancy buying one, contact either me or Granitoons and we’ll send you along our arty farty stuff. You can also support our Patreon and get exclusive access to behind the scenes artwork, personalised sketches and more!
It was all just super!

  1. How long have you been on DeviantArt? - Since late december 2006 - so coming up for 9 years in a few months.

  2. What does your username mean? - Combination of the words granite and cartoons since I hail from Aberdeen, Scotland also known as the granite city - holidaying there with family at the moment as it happens.

  3. Describe yourself in three words. - Looking for work.

  4. Are you left or right handed? - Right.

  5. What was your first deviation? A drawing of 2 of my characters posing as Fry & Laurie, with a terrible background.

  6. What is your favourite type of art to create? - Comic strips.

  7. If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be? - 1940s animation style painted backgrounds.

  8. What was your first favourite? - Favourites folder doesn't go that far back interestingly :iconthinkingplz: A glitch?

  10. Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?- I can't really decide but I'll say my wife just to be on the safe side. I need my dinner. All those that I follow know I follow them for a variety of reasons, so they all count too.

  11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be? - I have a few friends on here I'd love to meet, but I can't narrow it down to just one. Have already met with :iconbluebottleflyer::iconpurplesallyjay::iconlaptopgeek92::icondracorum-order: so that's a good start!

  15. What is your favourite DeviantArt memory? Meeting up with :icontopperhay: in person. We all know how that ended.

These comics are available to download from Amazon. If you don't have one of those e-book gadgets, you can also get these episodes in paper-back book form, although you'll have to wait for the annuals in some cases. Some of these are only available digitally, some are available in print and some in both formats.

Any suggestions for future download-only comics, or any other questions, please note me here.

Here are the links to the comics available so far - more will be added in time and this journal will be updated.

Thank you all for your continued support!

First of all sorry for the delay in thanking you all for wishing me a happy birthday, but we've only just gotten back online today. We've been moving back into our regular (and now renovated) home after staying for over 5 months in temporary accommodation down the hill. 99% of our stuff is over and most of it is tidy now. It looks great, although the art room and kitchen swapping places took a bit of getting used to! So, once again, sorry for the unavoidable delay and many thanks for all the birthday surprises!

You're all too kind :) Also I'd like to apologise if any of my earlier comments made little sense or had typos in them. I was using my mother-in-law's tablet...thing at the time and wasn't quite sure how to work it!

A couple of those gifts doubled up as entries for the classic comedy art jam I was hosting throughout May. Here's the full run of all the entries here. Comedy Art Jam - Make 'em Laugh! (CLOSED)This art jam is now closed. Many thanks to all those who took part and I hope you had a fun(ny) time!
Classic Comedy Art Jam – Make ‘Em Laugh!
For next month, the theme is COMEDY! Or, more specifically, old-timey comedy. We’re going to be paying tribute to those comedians of yesteryear whose names still live on to this day through their timeless comedy. So get to sketching out some funny sketches to go with this theme. It could be a classic scene re-enacted by appropriate characters putting their own spin on it, or just a new story done in the retro style.
There are no rules to comedy other than the obvious one – make ‘em laugh! However, here’s a few guidelines:-
    ·         Attempt at least one comic or picture of you cast taking part in a vintage comedy routine. Enjoy some Laurel & Hardy, Pitts & Todd or Three Stooges shorts to help you get the feel.

Also, just a reminder that the special offer we have on commissions and old art is still on. Look at these journals here for more details. Buy one get one free (CLOSED)What with the missus and I moving back into our old home after 5 months in temporary accommodation (and in constant mess!) we felt it was time to free up a bit of space.

I'll keep it simple - anything you see in my gallery, make me an offer and you can buy the originals (assuming I can find them). Or if you prefer, you can buy a bundle of 'mystery drawings' (ie. 5-10 drawings in a bundle for £1.00/$1.50 each)
Also, since the summer's coming, we're having a bit of a sale on commissions. Buy a full colour one from me and get a black & white one free! This does not apply to comic strips however, but you'll still get a discount on these too if you buy one within the next month.
Here's a few previous commissions what I done, as examples.

If there are any questions or queries you have, feel free to ask!

The 2 for 1 offer will run until the end of the month, so get 'em while the getting's good! The auction is open indefinitely.
